Holy Oldies

All the hits, all the big ones.

At 1:30 of this song, this easy going love song turns into Snow White running from the Big Bad Wolf (yeah, I know) for 30 full seconds. And then, the Buckinghams go back into the normal song without acknowledging what just happened. What the holy oldies?

Love love love love…

I love you, yes I do, I do”

The Buckinghams - Susan

My mom was PTA president for a while in Overland Park, Kansas. Knowing she loves oldies (it’s where I got my love them), I have to imagine this song gave her some great pleasure.

Bonus points - I love songs about being snarky.

Well, there’s Bobby Taylor sittin’ there and seven times he’s asked me for a date

Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he’s away”

Jeannie C Riley - Harper Valley PTA

Donovan is taking the idea of being able to do anything when your mind is made up a little too…rape-y.

You’re gonna be mine, I know it, we’ll do it in style

‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mine”

Donovan - Sunshine Superman

Before there was “more cowbell” there was “MORE WOODEN RECORDER!”

Bonus points for excellent band name.

I’m goin’ where the water tastes like wine

We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time”

Canned Heat - Going Up the Country

Check out this new Belle and Sebastian song! No? It isn’t them? HOLY OLDIES!

“Lock me away

And don’t allow the day”

Peter and Gordon - A World Without Love

:43 - whoa, there’s a tall dude in a wide stance playing tambourine?

:58 - holy oldies, he’s back! Stance even wider!

1:05 - nice knee bend!

1:11 - oh no he didn’t! he twirled that tambourine without even thinkin’ about it!

1:15 - camera pans off him. nice work camera a.

1:29 - close up duet. poor work camera b.

1:34 - main singer caught him looking straight into the camera. is pissed.

1:36 - main singer, very pissed now, smiles directly into camera.

1:58 - WHAT. THE. OLDIES. IS. THAT. MOVE?!?!?

Your looks intoxicate me

Even though your folks hate me”

The Turtles - Elenore

This song is more about describing the dance move that the song wants it to be known for than it is about a song which you dance a certain dance to. Did that make sense? I bet it makes as much sense as the lyrics to this song which have more instructions my signed volume of Betty Crocker’s Complete Recipe Book. Shut up.

Do what ya wanna a-it’s alright

Cause Bobby’s gonna do the swim”

Bobby Freeman - C’Mon and Swim

This song makes me imagine a new, young bachelorette in 1955 wearing an apron and cooking something in the oven. The song comes on the radio and she swoons. She grabs the old lamp standing in the corner and dances with it, pretending it’s Mel Carter. Holy Oldies. That sounds awesome. Hey lamp, next dance is mine.

If we ever say adieu, so kiss me, kiss me

Make me tell you I’m in love with you”

Mel Carter - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me

This song reached #18 in 1968, which is great. And honestly, I just don’t know how this South African pop band who sang about South African politics wasn’t huge in the US! Talk about all the right pieces!

You taught me all the things the way you’d like ‘em to be.

But I’d like to see if other people agree. ”

Four Jacks and a Jill - Master Jack.

The minimal set dressing really highlights the raw desire and lets the musicians stand out. No need for fancy dance numbers, extras and props here! Just power chords and talkin’ about gettin’ it. That or the television show was really broke.

I’m not content to be with you in the daytime

Girl I want to be with you all of the time ”

The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night
